Caring for Bandage Dresses and Evening Knits Between Wears
A bandage dress is built from narrow bands of knit fabric, usually a blend of rayon, nylon and spandex, sewn together so the garment shapes and supports the body. That construction is what gives the silhouette its sculpted look, and it is also why the dress needs a little more care than an ordinary jersey piece. A few habits will keep it holding its shape for many seasons.
Washing and drying
- Check the label first. Many bandage pieces are marked dry clean only. When hand washing is allowed, use cool water and a gentle detergent.
- Never wring or twist. Press water out gently, then roll the dress in a clean towel.
- Dry flat. Hanging a wet knit lets gravity stretch the bands out of proportion. Lay it on a towel or a mesh rack away from direct heat.
- Skip the tumble dryer. High heat breaks down elastic fibres and can leave the fabric slack.
Storage
Fold bandage dresses rather than hanging them for long periods, especially heavier styles. Store them in a breathable cotton garment bag or drawer with space around them so the bands are not crushed. If you do hang a dress briefly before an event, use a padded hanger and fold it over the bar instead of hanging it by the straps.
Before and after wearing
Let a dress rest for a day after wearing so the knit can recover its natural tension. Steam on a low setting, held a few inches away, to release creases. Never press it directly with a hot iron. Small snags can usually be eased back into the weave with a blunt needle from the inside, so avoid cutting loose threads.
Fit affects how long a dress lasts, too. A piece that is too small strains the seams and bands, while one that is too large loses its sculpting effect. Our size guide explains how to measure before choosing a style. The lookbook has ideas for pairing dresses with outerwear and accessories that won't catch on the fabric.
